The Estate

An equestrian centre was established also at Brechin in 2001 and is already well recognised locally as an excellent venue for equestrian events and training. It incorporates a challenging cross country course, designed by Captain Mark Phillips, and a livery stable.

Further new ventures are continually under consideration.

"Since the summer of 2002 Brechin Castle has opened daily from mid July to beginning of August to the public" Parts of the building date from the 13th century and it occupies a fine defensive position, formerly moated, on a rocky outcrop high above the River Southesk. The panelled public rooms are of particular interest and there is a fine collection of works of art. Of particular interest to gardeners is the walled garden, also open to visitors by arrangement. This is one of Scotland's outstanding private gardens with a particularly fine range of unusual plants. The Glenesk Folk Museum at The Retreat in Glenesk was set up by the local community with the assistance of the 16th Earl in 1955 and is still closely associated with the Estate. It contains a remarkable collection of local artefacts reflecting the history of those who live in that highland community and their forbears over hundreds of years, as well as a shop and tea room.

A major reconstruction of the Retreat has been undertaken to provuide a new museum, tearoom and shop, together with new community facilities.  The ownership of the Retreat has now passed from the Estate to the Glenesk Trust a body made up of local community members.

In addition to its role as a diversified modern family business the Dalhousie Estates are located in a beautiful part of Scotland which offers much to the visitor. As well as the formal visitor facilities at Brechin Castle Centre and The Retreat there is excellent walking on the Estate with an extensive network of footpaths. Responsible visitors are welcome and are encouraged to ask for local guidance and information. While the Estates are a working environment and form the basis of a thriving rural community, access requests can be accommodated throughout the year, with some seasonal limitations.
